World premiere of six new dance works at Marion Cultural Centre in August
Move Through Life Dance Company (MTL) has unveiled details of six new dance works set to have their world premiere at Marion Cultural Centre on 16 August for Illuminate 2012.
Illuminate shines a light on new dance works developed through MTL’s choreographic incubator program, Expand, which encourages choreographers to develop new dance works by offering dancers, rehearsal space, peer support, mentoring and presentation opportunities.
“We are thrilled to see the premiere of Ripple, which echoes the fascinating curves of coral, the intricacy of crochet and the power of community” said McDonald. “Ripple was set to premiere during the Adelaide Fringe Festival in March, but was delayed, and now it will form the centrepiece of Illuminate” says Artistic Director Jo McDonald
Ripple choreographer Kirsty Duncan says “I was drawn by the vibrant colours and rich textures of the RiAus Adelaide Reef Project, and inspired to choreograph Ripple in response to the unexpected background of the project which drew on visual art, marine environmentalism, hyperbolic geometry and the revival of feminine handicraft.”
McDonald continued “It’s wonderful to have two new works by Juliette Griffin, who was a guest dancer in our last Illuminate season. Juliette’s background in circus and physical theatre has resulted in The Detectives, a clever mash up of circus and physical theatre and old school silent movie slapstick”.
“Another highlight will be an improvisation based piece featuring all eleven dancers in the company by guest choreographer Tim Rodgers. We have incredible fun with Tim, who has danced with the Australian Ballet and West Australian Ballet. He has opened a world of imagination and freedom for the company in his approach to creating and performing dance.”
The Illuminate and Expand programs were kick started in 2010 and 2011 by grant funding from the City of Marion and Arts SA. With the support of Isobel Redmond MP as chief patron, Move Through Life has a vision to inspire and enable adults to dance throughout their lives, and to support choreographers and dancers to be creative, courageous and to create inspiring new dance works.

A very interesting show. My daughter and I loved “The Detectives”. It was very funny with great Choreography.
Loved the detectives – very clever.
